Check it on the portal, not from the text alone
A statutory communication, meaning a notice, letter, order, draft order or summons, is referenced by a document identification number. Circular 4 of 2026 says that reference can sit in the communication, in a separate document, or in the email. Each page of the communication carries the number. A public note, such as a set of questions, does not need one.
The check is on the Compliance Portal, under DIN authentication, after you log in and open Pending Actions. Do not treat every SMS with no number on it as fake, and do not treat every SMS that has a number as a demand. The portal is the record.
Some communications can be issued without a number in the situations the circular lists, including a technical failure. Those have to say they were issued without a number, and they need approval within 15 days. If you cannot match what you received to anything in the account, raise a grievance on the e-filing portal. The e-filing numbers are 1800 103 0025 and 1800 419 0025, and +91-80-46122000 and +91-80-61464700, Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 20:00.
A campaign is not a notice
The Compliance Portal FAQ lists five things a registered taxpayer can open there: the AIS, an e-campaign, an e-verification, an e-proceeding, and DIN authentication. You do not log out of e-filing to reach them. Pending Actions is the door.
An e-campaign is the department asking you to look at information reported against your PAN. It is not, by itself, an intimation, a scrutiny notice or a demand. Those carry a section and sit in e-proceedings. The page that sorts a numbered notice is which section, and what to do.
If nothing is waiting, the FAQ says the screen reads that no compliance record has been generated for you. You can still open the AIS from the same portal. The helpdesk for campaigns, e-verification and the AIS is 1800 103 4215, Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 18:00.
Send the text of the message, and we will say whether it is a campaign, a notice, or nothing that is on the account.
A duplicate remittance in the AIS
The AIS is the department's statement for the year. You open it from the e-filing account and you can submit feedback on a row. The department's AIS page is the set of steps. This page does not rename those buttons.
If the same inward remittance is listed twice, the feedback belongs on the row that is not a second receipt. The wider mismatch, including a row that is not yours, is on the high-value transaction page. A foreign-asset view in the AIS is a different question, and the window for missed Schedule FA years is FAST-DS.
Reply on the portal. Do not reply to the SMS or the email as if it were the filing.
