What am I missing on my Indian tax? Ten questions, one score.
Residential status, returns, treaty claims, foreign assets, notices. Answer all ten and you get a risk score, the specific gaps that produced it, and the fix for each.
What is your current Indian tax residential status?
Based on your days in India this financial year and the past 10 years.
Which country do you currently live in?
This determines which DTAA treaty applies to you.
Have you filed Indian ITR in the last 3 financial years?
Includes belated returns, revised returns, and nil returns.
Do you own property in India?
Includes self-occupied, let-out, and under-construction property.
Do you have NRO accounts or FDs in India?
NRO = Non-Resident Ordinary. Used for Indian-sourced income like rent, dividends, or interest.
Have you ever claimed DTAA treaty relief on your Indian TDS?
DTAA = Double Tax Avoidance Agreement. Claimed via Form 10F + TRC + Section 90 (FY 2025-26 and earlier) or Form 41 + TRC + Section 159 (FY 2026-27 onward).
Do you hold foreign financial assets outside India?
Overseas bank accounts, brokerage, mutual funds, pension funds, foreign property.
If you are Resident/RNOR, have you disclosed foreign assets under Schedule FA in your ITR?
Schedule FA is mandatory for ROR (Resident and Ordinarily Resident) only. RNORs and NRIs are exempt under the ITR instructions read with the Black Money Act 2015. ROR + foreign assets = mandatory Schedule FA disclosure.
Do you have a valid Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) from your country?
Required alongside Form 10F to claim DTAA. Usually valid 1 year.
Have you received any Indian tax notice in the last 3 years?
Includes 143(1) intimation, 143(2) scrutiny, 148 reassessment, 245 refund adjustment, 139(9) defective return.
10 of 10 still to answer. The score appears when all ten are in.
What to do with this number
Not sure of your status? Work it out first
Half of these answers depend on whether you are non-resident, RNOR or resident for the year.
Never claimed the treaty rate?
A TRC and Form 41 (formerly Form 10F) with the bank, and the past years through your return.
Got a notice you have not opened?
Most have a reply clock running from the date of issue. Open it today; a CA reads it with you.
How this is worked out
- Each gap that applies to you adds points; the total is capped at 100 and mapped to a band. The same answers always give the same score.
- The score ranks urgency, not the rupee amount at stake. A single unread notice outranks several small refunds.
- Answers stay in your browser; nothing is sent until you choose to contact us.
