Form 10F is free. Agents in your WhatsApp group charge ₹80,000 for it.

TL;DR

Form 10F is a 1-page self-declaration under Rule 21AB. Filing takes 5 minutes on the income tax portal. NRI 'consultants' in Dubai, London and Singapore are routinely charging ₹30k-₹80k to file it. Here's what the work is actually worth, why the scam exists, and how to spot it.

What Form 10F actually is

is a one-page self-declaration under of the Income Tax Rules. You fill six fields, name, , status, country of tax residence, TIN, validity period, and upload your foreign .

Since 2022, the Central Board of Direct Taxes () moved filing fully online via the Income Tax Department portal (incometax.gov.in). Log in with your . Go to e-File → Income Tax Forms → File Income Tax Forms → Form 10F. Fill, upload, submit. Acknowledgment number is instant.

Total time: 5 minutes if you already have your and credentials. Total cost: ₹0 to the Income Tax Department.

That's the work. That's the entire work.

Form 10F is a 5-minute, ₹0 self-declaration. That's the entire work.

Six fields, one upload. Filed via e-File → Income Tax Forms → File Income Tax Forms → on incometax.gov.in. The government charges nothing. Acknowledgment is instant. Once you have TRC + ready, the whole filing takes about 5 minutes.

What NRI agents are charging

In the last 12 months we've seen s quoted the following for filing:

  • Dubai WhatsApp ' tax consultant'. AED 2,000 (~₹45,000) per year.
  • London-based 'India tax expert' — £400 (~₹42,000) per year.
  • Singapore Indian financial advisor. SGD 500 (~₹32,000) per year.
  • Specific case last month: a Kuwaiti was quoted ₹80,000 for 'end-to-end ' with a ' coordination fee' on top.

  • All of these are for the same 5-minute portal filing. The 'consultants' are arbitraging s' unfamiliarity with the Indian tax portal.

The actual value of the labour is roughly what a junior CA articled student would bill for a 15-minute task: ₹500-1,500. Anything above ₹3,000 is pure information asymmetry.

    Common mistakes

What NRI 'consultants' are quoting — same 5-minute filing, 10×–50× markup

All four quotes were collected in the last 12 months. Same 6-field self-declaration. Same portal. Same ₹0 government fee.

    Dubai

    AED 2,000 / year (~₹45,000)

WhatsApp ' tax consultant'. Pitched as annual recurring service. Same 5-minute portal filing every year.

    London

    £400 / year (~₹42,000)

Self-styled 'India tax expert'. Bundles into a recurring retainer. Form 10F itself is the entire deliverable.

    Singapore

    SGD 500 / year (~₹32,000)

Indian financial advisor. Often added to a broader ' compliance' invoice with no other deliverable specified.

    Kuwait

    ₹80,000 — 'end-to-end Form 10F'

A real Kuwaiti quote from last month. ' coordination fee' was charged on top. Information asymmetry priced at face value.

    Why the scam exists

Three reasons became a pricing opportunity.

    1. Portal friction. The ITD portal is confusing for non-residents. Password resets need Indian mobile OTPs. UI labels use Hindi-English hybrid terminology. First-time users genuinely can't find the form.

    2. confusion. The form requires a valid foreign TRC uploaded as PDF. s spend weeks figuring out where to get the TRC, and the 'consultant' bundles TRC help into the fee, creating the impression it's a single complex service.

    3. Fear of rejection. can be rejected by the ITD if the period doesn't match or the TIN field is blank. s worried about errors pay the premium for peace of mind.

These are all real frictions. They don't justify ₹80,000. They justify maybe ₹2,000 for a clean white-glove filing.

How to file Form 10F / Form 41 yourself (the 5-minute version)

Step 1. Log in to incometax.gov.in using your . If you don't have an account, register, you'll need an Indian mobile for OTP. A relative's number works.

Step 2. Navigate: Dashboard → e-File → Income Tax Forms → File Income Tax Forms → Others → . Select the assessment year.

Step 3. Fill the six fields:

  • Name (exactly as per your )
  • Status (individual for most s)
  • Nationality / country of incorporation (usually Indian for individuals)
  • Country of tax residence (your foreign country + your foreign TIN)
  • Address in the foreign country
  • Period of validity (match your dates)

  • Step 4. Upload your foreign as a PDF. Submit.

Step 5. Download the acknowledgment PDF. Share the acknowledgment number + with your Indian bank and broker. Done.

The whole thing is ~5 minutes once you have + ready.

File it yourself in 5 minutes

Red flags when someone quotes you a high fee

Three signals a fee is inflated.

    1. 'Complexity fee for filings', there is no extra complexity. The form is identical for residents and NRIs.

    2. ' coordination charge on top', if the agent is helping you get the TRC from your foreign authority, that's separate work and worth maybe ₹1,000-5,000 depending on the country. But it's not part of . Anyone bundling them at ₹80k is charging twice.

    3. 'Annual retainer for compliance' where the only deliverable listed is , this is a markup on a 5-minute task. DTAA compliance is Form 10F + + bank coordination + (optional) past-year . Form 10F alone isn't worth a retainer.

The honest price range for filing as a paid service: ₹500-3,000 per filing. Anything above that is a markup on ignorance.

    What TrustNRI charges

Our Generator is free. It pre-fills every field using your country data and your . You download the PDF and submit it on the portal yourself.

If you want us to file it for you (because portal friction is real and you don't want to deal with OTPs), we charge a low flat fee per filing, published on the schedule of charges page. No country surcharge. Same price a resident would pay for equivalent compliance work.

Annual renewal is a smaller flat fee, because we already have your and on file from the previous filing. Exact amounts quoted on the call.

Book free CA appointment if you'd rather talk to someone first. 15 minutes. No card. We'll tell you honestly whether you need us to file or whether you should just do it yourself.

What to do if you've already paid an inflated fee

First, don't beat yourself up. The information asymmetry is real and the pitch is convincing.

Second, check what you actually got. Ask for:

  • The acknowledgment number from the ITD portal.
  • The date of filing.
  • A copy of the uploaded.

  • If they can produce all three, the filing happened. You paid a high price for a real service. Your claim still works.

If they can't produce them, the filing didn't happen. That's different, ask for a refund, and if they refuse, the has a complaint mechanism under the Consumer Protection Act. File a consumer court complaint. ₹80,000 is well above the small-claims threshold.

Third, next year, file yourself. Or pay us our published flat fee if you still want help. Either way, don't pay the scam again.
