NRI MF Folio Frozen? Here's the SEBI KYC Fix.

TL;DR

Between April and May 2024, thousands of NRI mutual fund folios got frozen overnight. SEBI tightened KYC validation rules. Any folio without Registered / Validated status lost redemption, switch, and SIP rights.

What SEBI changed and why your folio is locked

SEBI rolled out new KYC validation tiers. KYC Registered, KYC Validated, KYC On Hold, KYC Rejected. Only folios in the first two tiers can transact. Folios stuck in On Hold or Rejected are frozen: no redemption, no switch, no new SIP, no SWP instalment.

The rollout completed between April and May 2024. Any whose KYC had been filed with an old-format passport number, expired overseas ID, or a mismatch between and data landed in On Hold. The status flip happened silently on the (KYC Registration Agency) side. s like HDFC MF, ICICI Prudential, Kotak, Axis enforce the block at the transaction gate.

As an you find out when you try to redeem and the platform shows “KYC not validated, contact your .”

Frozen silently in the April–May 2024 rollout

SEBI re-tiered every KYC: Registered / Validated / On Hold / Rejected. Only the first two transact. Folios with old-format passports, expired IDs, or - mismatches landed in On Hold with no warning.

Which KRA do you check first

Five s handle Indian MF KYC: CAMS KRA, KFin KRA, CVL KRA, NDML KRA, BSE KRA. Your KYC is registered with one, not all five. Check all five because you won't remember which one has your record.

Go to each 's status checker:

  • camskra.com → Inquire on Status
  • kra.kfintech.com → KYC Enquiry
  • cvlkra.com → Inquire Status
  • kra.ndml.in → KYC Status
  • bsekra.com → KYC Enquiry

  • Enter your . One of them returns your status. If none do, you never had KYC done, file a fresh one via CAMS or KFin.

The fix, re-KYC with the right form and supporting docs

If your status shows On Hold or Rejected, file a re-KYC with the issuing . Required:

  • card copy (current)
  • Valid passport with overseas visa / PR stamp
  • Overseas address proof dated within 3 months, utility bill, tenancy contract, bank statement showing overseas address
  • Passport-size photo
  • Signed Individual KYC Form (the new format, not the pre-2024 one)
  • / self-certification

  • Couriers the pack to the 's desk (address on their website). Processing: 10–15 working days. Once your status flips to Validated, transact through the or your platform, no need to re-register per-AMC.

If the rejects the submission, the rejection letter lists the reason. Fix that specific field and resubmit. Don't start from zero.

While you wait, three things not to do

  • Don't file parallel KYC applications with multiple s. The system flags duplicates and slows everything down.
  • Don't try to transact through a different during the freeze window. Your status is centralised; the block applies everywhere.
  • Don't convert to a different account type hoping to reset. The -linked KYC follows you.

  • The cheapest fix is the correct first submission. Our CAs review the document pack before you courier it, that alone cuts the rejection loop in half.

    Common mistakes

Three things NOT to do while you wait

Each of these adds 2–4 weeks to your unfreeze timeline.

    1

    Don't file parallel applications

Submitting to multiple s flags duplicates and slows everything down. Pick the issuing KRA from the status check and go with that one.

    2

    Don't try a different AMC

status is centralised across all five. The block applies everywhere — switching s doesn't reset it.

    3

Don't open a new account type

-linked KYC follows you. A fresh account inherits the same On Hold / Rejected status.
